Remediation > In situ/Ex situ
In situ simply refers to “in-place”, unmoved unexcavated; remaining at the site or in the subsurface. Soil/groundwater remediation can be conducted while the media remains in place or ex-situ, by removing it. In-situ technologies would include enhanced fluid recovery, air sparging, vapor extraction, and bioremediation. Ex-situ examples would include traditional soil “dig and haul” and progress to more complex technologies such as groundwater recovery and treatment, and dual phase extraction.
